Tired All Day, Even After 8 -12 Hours? Could It Be Sleep Apnea?

Ever woken up feeling like you ran a marathon in your sleep even though you were in bed all night? Or has someone told you that you snore like a truck engine and sometimes stop breathing while you sleep?

That’s not just “bad sleep.” It could be a serious condition called sleep apnea.

So, what is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is a disorder where your breathing repeatedly stops and starts while you sleep. Each time this happens, your body is jolted awake — even if you don’t realize it — and that ruins your sleep cycle.

There are two main types:

- Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) – caused by throat muscles relaxing and blocking airflow.

- Central Sleep Apnea – when your brain doesn’t send the right signals to your breathing muscles.

Signs you might have it:

1. Loud snoring

2. Gasping for air in your sleep

3. Waking up with a dry mouth

4. Morning headaches

5. Daytime fatigue or trouble focusing

6. Irritability or mood swings

Many people ignore these signs because they don’t seem dangerous. But untreated sleep apnea can lead to high blood pressure, heart problems, diabetes, and even stroke.

How to take control:

  1. Track your sleep -Notice patterns , how tired do you feel? Is your partner noticing loud snoring or gasping?
  2. Use a pulse oximeter at night- Drops in oxygen levels while you sleep are a big red flag. A simple pulse oximeter can help detect this
  3. Lifestyle changes- Losing even a small amount of weight, avoiding alcohol before bed, or sleeping on your side can improve things.
  4. Talk to a doctor- If symptoms persist, you might need a sleep study or treatment like a CPAP machine to keep your airways open while you sleep.

Why it matters:

Sleep isn’t just rest. It’s when your body repairs, your brain resets, and your heart takes a break. When you lose good sleep, your whole system suffers and your risk for long-term health issues shoots up.

Tip:

If you use a BP monitor and notice higher blood pressure readings over time, poor sleep might be a hidden cause.

Don’t wait until it affects your heart, your mood, or your focus. Start with awareness, and make your sleep something you take seriously not just something you survive through.
